In Search of the Holy Grail

One of my favorite movies was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It's the story about the search for the Holy Grail.

People have been searching for this thing for centuries. Spoiler alert: they find it at the end of the movie. The movie is 30 years old now. If you haven't seen it yet, then I'm sorry, I just spoiled it for you.

For years, I lived near the Fountain of Youth in Saint Augustine, FL. It's a horrible tourist trap that I recommend you avoid if you ever visit Saint Augustine. Tons of tourists taking pictures of the same thing. You won't find me there.

As the story goes, Spanish explorers crossed the ocean to find the Fountain of Youth. It never existed.

They spent years looking for the lost civilization of Atlantis. They're still looking for Bigfoot, Jesus's body, aliens, that plane that crashed into the Indian Ocean in 2014, and more

I think there's something about our psyche that is always looking for something that we cannot find. Just as we chase stuff that we can't have, we chase things that we know probably don't exist.

Nutrition and diet are no different. The same cognitive biases that affect us in other areas of life also affect us when it comes to health. People believe the weirdest things when it comes to health.

I spent years of my life looking for the Holy Grail of nutrition. I was looking for that perfect diet that would solve all my problems once and for all.

Except, I never found it. Even today I'm tweaking things to see if I can get the most out of my nutrition. The data I have (Weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, energy levels) indicate yes. Who knows. Maybe my liver enzymes are out of whack. But now that I'm sampling new products, going to more social events, and traveling more, eating a consistent diet is hard. That's why principles (eat a variety, eat when hungry, move your body more) trump meal plans any day.

The thing is, finding the Holy Grail of isn't worth it, even if you could find it. There are so many components of health and diet is just one of them.

If you're looking for that Holy Grail and you still haven't found it, then stop. End your quest early and take control of what you eat.
