Care Less What Others Think But Not Completely

Standard conventional advice in the self-help industry is, "you shouldn't care what others think." You should be yourself and if others don't like you, then that's too bad.

This is good to an extent. If you care what others think too much, you spend your whole life trying to please others and do what they want. 

But here's the problem: we are pack animals. We live in tribes, neighborhoods, communities, social networks. If you don't care at all what others think, then you risk alienating all of them and you will have no friends. You will basically be isolated. That's not a good life.

When it comes to the way you look, you should care less, but you shouldn't pretend you're healthy when you're not. Let me explain.

The fitness-cosmetic industry has taken advantage of our desire to be attractive to others. One thing that annoys me about the fitness-cosmetic industry is its emphasis on the cosmetic part and not the fitness part. It's like they've forgotten why being fit is a good thing (and there are many reasons). Instead of selling, you know, fitness, they sell the cosmetic part: "Look good by summer!" "Summer is right around the corner!" "Look hot in 60 days."

Basically, the fitness-cosmetic industry has convinced you that you need protein powders, trainers, boot camps, and a bunch of other crap so that you can impress people that you don't know and that don't care about you. There's never any emphasis on being fit and why that's important. They've resorted to cheap tricks that appeal to our vanity.

Everyone has vanity. I do. You do. If you're not fit and unhealthy, you know it. You can see it. You can feel it. You don't need others to tell you that. And you should get fit and healthy because it's the right thing to do, not because someone will comment on you. Health is one of the pillars of a good life (wealth, love, happiness, spirituality being the others).

You shouldn't get fit so you can impress them and get their approbation. There are better ways to impress people. And they probably won't care. 

If that's your motivation, then I can't help you.
